Boy's Cross Country Coaching Staff

Tommy Newton-Neal

Head Coach

Tommy will be entering his 6th year of coaching cross country and track. He began running at Laguna Beach High School where he qualified for the state meet three years in a row, capturing a CIF and California state title his senior year. He went on to compete at UC Irvine, where he earned NCAA Academic All-American and scholar-athlete honors in cross country. As an Anteater, Tommy double majored in Education Sciences and Sociology. He went on to get a Masters in Education and a several teaching credentials at APU, UCLA, and PLNU. As a cross country coach, Tommy has collected 5 league titles, 2 CIF podium finishes, 2 CIF Champions (1 individual, 1 team), coached over 12 individuals to all CIF honors in cross country (top 15), and has had teams place 6th, 3rd, and 1st place at the California State Championships. Tommy teaches Physical Education at Newport Harbor High School. He is married to Aliya Neal and has a cat named Finnlie.

Colin Hacker

Assistant Coach

Coach Hacker ran high school cross country and track at Cabrillo High School. He competed as an NCAA Division 1 athlete at UC Irvine, where he studied music and earned Academic All American and scholar athlete honors. He went on to get his masters degree at Concordia University. While at UCI, Coach Hacker was the Big West Conference Champion, 2x Cal/Nevada Champion, three time NCAA Qualifier in track, and boasts an impressive 3:55 road mile PR where he won the State Street Mile. He has coached at several years at the high school level and competed for Valor Track Club post collegiately. He currently teaches music within the Newport Mesa Unified School District.

Sam Hyams

Assistant Coach

Coach Hyams began running track and cross country at Foothill High school where he qualified for the California State Championships and broke the school record in the 1600m. He competed as a UC Irvine Anteater in cross country and track for four years where he earned Academic All American and scholar-athlete status, while studying history. He went on to get his law degree from UC Irvine and has been practicing law for 5 years now. Coach Hyams competed post collegiately for the Bay Area Track Club and Valor Track Club.
